Investment Officer – FMO Entrepreneurial Development Bank

Private Equity (PE) is an important part of FMO’s business as growth capital for companies is scarce in most emerging markets. FMO makes direct investments, invests in private equity funds and in co-investments with our investee funds. With its private equity business FMO is set to realize attractive, market driven returns and generate meaningful development impact.

The Private Equity department is looking for an Investment Officer for the Financial Institutions team (PE FI). The PE FI team is a diverse team, consisting of 11 investment professionals who have a passion for investing while creating development impact. The team is responsible for managing and expanding its portfolio of direct investments in banks, MFIs and NBFIs. The team manages both the FMO-A and MASSIF portfolio and is responsible for further building that portfolio with new investments, as well as seeking exit opportunities at attractive returns.

Your role

  • Execution of investments: business development and deal origination. Structuring and execution of transactions, in collaboration with other specialists as needed, under the direction of the Manager or Senior Investment Officer. Drafting account plans and/or country strategies.
  • Portfolio Management (Reviews/Fair Values): overall responsibility for quality and timelines of all internal documents related to the designated portfolio (e.g., reviews, Fair Values, change and waiver requests, disbursements, and Investment Review Committee memos). Independently attend shareholder meetings and actively represent FMO’s interests, discussing strategy with (nominee) directors, and seeking ways to add value by supporting the investee company (e.g., through corporate governance advice, Environmental & Social support, or capacity development).
  • Builds strong relationships with investees by understanding their business, the environment they operate in and the risks and challenges they face. Builds regional partner network.
  • Independently processes exits of investments.
  • Takes the lead, or participates with (S)IO, in negotiation/contracting process of investments together with the legal team.
  • Coaches Associates and Investment Analysts as required. Provides context on work delegated to/performed by Associates. Ensures clarity on role/task division. Provides input and feedback to Associates and Investment Analysts on credit reviews, change requests, disbursement memos and on their part of the investment proposals (CIP/FP)
  • Provides input to the team business plan. Participates in organisation-wide projects.

Your background

  • Master’s degree – preferably finance, economics, business administration or engineering.
  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant work experience in financial services of which at least 3 years of experience within private equity (supporting investments, analysing financial models, market mapping) is required.
  • Strong understanding of private equity structures, instruments, and legal documentation. Experience working with financial institutions is preferred.
  • International work experience is a preference, interest in other cultures is a must.

  • Excellent analytical/ financial modelling, research and problem-solving skills at transaction, investee, and portfolio management level.
  • Ability to effectively strike the balance between facilitating transactions at acceptable risk/return levels and upholding and promoting ESG, impact and integrity standards.
  • Ability to proactively build productive lasting working relationships with investees and strategic partners.
  • Ability to source investments, to build a trustworthy relationship with investees and persuade and influence at transaction level.
