Senior Director – The Boston Foundation

Position Summary:

With the goal of helping the Boston Foundation (“TBF”) accelerate and sustain equitable social outcomes in the Greater Boston community, this Senior Director will coordinate and develop strategies to increase alignment between donor philanthropy and the Boston Foundation’s philanthropic priorities and expand effective impact investing opportunities for TBF Donor Advised Fund (DAF) holders. The position will work with relationship managers to grow grantmaking that aligns with the Foundation’s vision and core strategies through the design of systems and processes that enhance communication, coordination, and tracking of such opportunities.

The Senior Director will also develop and refine the Boston Foundation’s impact investing program overall. In close collaboration with both the Finance and Program teams, as well as in partnership with relationship managers and our donor community, this individual will identify and vet potential impact investments for both the Boston Foundation and our donors, share potential opportunities with desired audience to grow investment, and report back to investors on progress at regular intervals.

Essential Functions:

Aligned Grantmaking (Increasing alignment between DAF holders and TBF priorities)

  • Manage the redesign of systems and processes to facilitate greater coordinated and collaborative grantmaking between the Foundation’s Program team and the DAF community;
  • Support relationship managers in presenting aligned opportunities for consideration by fund advisors; and
  • Help design benchmarks and measurement systems for tracking alignment between the Boston Foundation and DAF grantmaking;

Impact Investing (Facilitating Donor capital investments in projects with demonstrated positive social outcomes)

  • Collaborate with internal staff (Program and Philanthropy) and DAF advisors to source and develop new impact investment opportunities (particularly Program Related Investments {PRIs}) for consideration by both the Boston Foundation and our donor community;
  • Lead the due diligence process, in collaboration with Finance colleagues, to vet potential investments for impact, sustainability and “fit” with both TBF and target donors;
  • Design, develop, manage and contribute to, under Senior Management direction, the governance oversight process for all impact investments (excluding the Impact Pool) via management (for DAF investments) and program committee oversight (for Permanent Fund for Boston investments), understanding the complexities at each level of the transaction;
  • Review and vet accessible online platforms that would enable DAF advisors and other donors to explore impact investing and/or collaborative philanthropy opportunities;
  • Partner with Communications and Philanthropy staff to raise awareness around impact investment opportunities to grow investment activity and DAF assets under management at TBF;
  • Support the Business Equity Fund ecosystem and related activities; Monitor investments and report back to investors at regular intervals on the impact of their investments;
  • Develop programming to increase awareness and interest in impact investing more broadly; and
  • Ensure the impact investment program is creating positive impact for TBF, the communities we serve and is long-term economically sustainable to TBF and the donors.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support business development and cultivate referrals for The Philanthropic Initiative;
  • Maintain prospect, donor and fund records in Salesforce database; ensure timely entry and communication of activities;
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to implement and uphold data integrity protocols to ensure accurate reporting and inform departmental activities; and
  • Individuals assigned to this position may perform other duties as assigned.


Preparation, Knowledge, Previous Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, Master’s degree or equivalent experience preferred;
  • Ability to work remotely when needed; and
  • At least 10 years related work experience, with significant time focused on impact investing.

Skills, Abilities, Competencies:

Donor Alignment Skills

  • Familiarity with fundraising and philanthropy, in particular with high-net worth donors;
  • Strong collaboration and influencing skills, and ability to respond to development opportunities as they arise; and
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; strong customer service orientation.

Impact Investing Skills

  • Proven experience in the research, design and implementation of various sector specific impact investing strategies;
  • Demonstrated experience in due diligence of social impact funds and/or projects;
  • Ability to analyze complex problems and effectively communicate solutions to others;
  • Strong understanding of and interest in financial markets and financial modeling;
  • Ability to understand and communicate finance, accounting and investment strategies to a wide range of audiences including donors and professional advisors; and
  • Excellent data management and reporting skills.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

  • Ability to sit and/or stand at workstation for long periods of time;
  • Ability to use a computer monitor and keyboard for long periods of time; and
  • Ability to work remotely and on-site, as required.
