  • Each candidate will have a track record of demonstrable value creation in their respective field
  • Relationships with North American / European investors are strongly preferable

Background

The University of Melbourne (UoM) and leading Australian diversified alternative asset firm Tanarra are together launching a ground-breaking new venture capital fund to invest in UoM and UOM-affiliated intellectual property and innovation.

This new venture capital fund, Tin Alley Ventures Fund I (the Fund), will invest in high potential start-ups affiliated with UoM, generated by staff, researchers and students. The Fund will be managed by Tin Alley Ventures, a newly established venture fund manager, 70% owned by Tanarra and 30% owned by UoM.

This is the first time there will be a venture capital fund focused exclusively on the world-leading research capabilities of the UoM. UoM has highly respected capabilities in a wide range of important areas for the future, such as life sciences, physical sciences, deep tech, AI and quantum computing. Subject to some limited existing rights to third parties, the Fund will have proprietary and preferred access to start-up opportunities emerging from UM’s innovation and commercialisation ecosystem – Australia’s #1 ranked university and #33 in the world.

The Fund will invest in all stages of commercialisation from Seed, Series-A through to Pre-IPO. The Fund has follow-on investment rights to a portfolio of UoM’s existing venture investments.

The anticipated size of the Fund is A$100-150 million. A$90 million in indicative pre-commitments has been received to date including A$25 million committed from UoM and A$27 million committed from Tanarra and its investment partners. The Fund has received strong support from a wide range of UoM alumni who are interested in not only investing but also providing assistance to the Fund and its investee companies. The first close of the Fund is scheduled for 31 October 2022. A second close is scheduled for early 2023. The Fund size will be capped at A$200 million.

The design of the Fund has drawn on the experience of the successful investment entity created by Oxford University, Oxford Sciences Enterprises (OSE), with which Tanarra has a close association.

Tin Alley Ventures has the benefit, due to Tanarra’s global relationships, of access to a number of international advisors who are world leaders in their field, such as Dave Norwood (co-founder of OSE, founder of IP Group), Pete Davies (co-founder of OSE, Lansdowne Partners), Sir John Bell (Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford) and Sir Peter Donnelly (CEO, Genomics plc).

Tin Alley Ventures is launching a global search for two candidates to lead the Fund investment team, one with domain expertise in life sciences, the other in technology and various fields of science. These fields are broad and the successful candidates do not need to have specific expertise across the whole spectrum; one or two particular areas of expertise will suffice. It will of course be expected that they will build investment teams with the relevant sets of expertise.

One of these candidates will also have the overall Managing Partner responsibility in the Fund. Both roles will be based in Melbourne, in the University of Melbourne precinct.

The long-term vision is to raise subsequent funds based on the success of Fund I, and to change the university commercialisation ecosystem in Australia for the better.

This is an outstanding career opportunity for individuals with the right skill set and experience, and a desire to be at the forefront of the growth in successful commercialisation of university research and IP in Australia.
