Employer Spotlight: Quona Capital

impact finance

While progress has been made in financial inclusion, there are still 1.4 billion unbanked or underbanked adults worldwide. In emerging markets, limited access to digital accounts and emergency funds hinders economic growth and resilience. However, advancements in digital infrastructure and smartphone penetration have enabled fintech companies to serve previously ignored customer segments. For instance, the number of unbanked individuals has decreased from 1.7 billion to 1.4 billion in just four years, with global account ownership in emerging markets rising from 51% to 71%. In a world where access to financial services can be a catalyst for change, Quona Capital is playing a crucial role in reshaping financial inclusion in emerging markets. Through their purpose-driven approach, data-driven strategies, and investments in impactful fintech solutions, they are making a real difference in the lives of underserved populations. As they continue to drive innovation and support emerging markets, the impact of Quona Capital will undoubtedly create positive change and pave the way for a more inclusive financial future. We  recently sat down with two key members of Quona’s team and explored their backgrounds, investment strategies, and the initiatives they are driving for financial inclusion.

Led in part by Monica Brand Engel, Quona is dedicated to funding fintech solutions that address real problems faced by underserved communities in emerging markets. Monica's passion for bringing marginalized people and ideas into the mainstream led her to pursue a career in financial services. With a focus on expanding access to banking for underserved populations, she worked with microfinance institutions and launched new financial products in emerging markets such as South Africa and Mexico. However, her frustration with expanding new products led her back to investing, where she saw the potential to support innovative companies that could make a lasting impact. This vision led to the birth of Quona Capital.

To ensure that their vision is executed, Quona needs to make sure that impact measurement and management practices are adhered to to make sure they’re supporting their portfolio companies in the best way. This is where Kirstin Sadler, Manager of Platform & Impact at Quona comes in. Kristin transitioned into impact finance after starting her career in international development. With an MBA focused on the intersection of impact and tech in emerging markets, she became passionate about financial inclusion. Joining Quona, Kristin focuses on impact strategy, measurement, and providing support to portfolio companies. Together, Monica and Kristin bring a wealth of experience and a shared commitment to creating positive change.

Quona differentiates itself through its global-local strategy, operating experience in emerging markets, and purpose-driven approach. As a data-driven venture firm, they manage $715 million in assets and leverage $4 billion in capital. Their focus is on measuring impact consistently and serving underserved populations. They invest in leading companies that reshape financial services to meet the needs of underserved consumers and MSMEs, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

To ensure meaningful impact, Quona utilizes an impact framework that assesses access, product relevance, and ecosystem and enabling effects. This comprehensive approach allows them to measure impact beyond their direct customer base. Their investment strategy focuses on reshaping financial services, driving financial inclusion, and aligning with the SDGs. By investing in innovative companies, Quona is actively working to reduce poverty, inequality, and increase savings and business growth.

For individuals looking to make a difference in the world of financial inclusion, Quona offers exciting career opportunities. The firm is actively seeking professionals with financial analysis skills, market familiarity, and traits such as adaptability, curiosity, teamwork, and a strong work ethic. Quona believes in investing in talent and providing upward mobility within the organization, creating a dynamic environment for personal growth.
